CMT Blog: Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” Is No. 1 in UK

Everybody knows Taylor Swiftjust got back from a slew of shows overseas. But in this chat with Chicago’s country radio station, US 99.5, Swift has even more good news to share: “I got a call yesterday from my label and they said that ‘Love Story’was No. 1 in the UK this week,” she said. That’s huge news. Even for Swift, who seems to have redefined huge news in country music circles. As for her upcoming tour, she wouldn’t give too much away. She does hint around about a couple of cool surprises, though. “The one thing that I wanted was in the encore. And it’s the craziest part of the show. But the thing that I can talk about, because I don’t want to blow the surprise of the other thing, is that I have a giant castle on the stage,” Swift said. No mention of white horses, though.

Houston Press: Aftermath: Taylor Swift at RodeoHouston

Teenage girls turned up in droves for Taylor Swift at RodeoHouston Friday night, letting out piercing screams in between every song, rivaling the intensity of those at the Jonas Brothers concert. Swift already belongs among that small cadre of artists who can send then fans into a frenzy just by showing up at the venue; at Reliant Stadium, her easygoing charm, and flairs of spunk and sass showed why.

Swift seemed genuinely elated to be at the rodeo for the first time, which came through in her energetic performance. Not only did she pack the house, but she also kept the crowd going, a hard task in a venue where the audience is hundreds of feet away.

Swift opened strong with “You Belong to Me,” but it was after a blink of eye wardrobe change from a plain black and jeans into a sparkling gold minidress and went into “Our Song” that she really caught fire and got the crowd up and swaying.

“I’ve never seen so many people before,” Swift said to the crowd. She set a record-breaking attendance of 72,658 just above the Jonas Brothers – which might be especially satisfying for her, considering “Forever and Always” is about her ex Joe Jonas. Before she went into the song, she gave a warning to all the guys: If you don’t want me sing bad things about you, she said, then don’t do bad things. Ear-splitting cheers from teenage girls immediately erupted.

Swift especially shone on her ballad “White Horse.” With only her acoustic guitar as accompaniment, her voice came through clear, soulful and pitch-perfect. With rocker “Should’ve Said No,” Swift lost some her twang and turned up the attitude. Her energy and enthusiasm let her pull off the somewhat cheesy song interlude where she stepped away from the mic to do some trash-can banging, arching her back as if to do the limbo to 80s hair metal inspired guitar. Afterward, she paused, drawing a roar from the crowd.

For “Tim McGraw, ” Swift asked the crowd to light up their cell phones, and shortly thereafter, the stadium was lit up like a constellation. She followed with “Love Story,” which had almost every teenage girl – and even some middle-aged women – up and singing along.

Music videos accompanying “Teardrops on My Guitar” and “Love Story” detracted from the experience because they took the focus (and big-screen displays) away from her. Swift is a natural onstage. When she’s in her rhythm, nothing can steal the spotlight from her – not even the god awful emo cuts of her guitarist and bass player.

Swift followed “Love Story” with “Changes.” During the chorus of “hallelujah,” the audience made ripples across the entire stadium with their arms up in the air going back in forth. She closed with “Picture to Burn,” which she hotly declared was dedicated to all those boys out there who were liars and cheaters. She sang about moving on from a bad relationship with the same force she’d kept up the entire set.

Judging from her performance, the singer-songwriter is much more than a teen sensation and won’t be moving on any time soon.

The Tennessean: Taylor Swift needs dancers for ’09 tour

So I guess this was the big announcement:

Taylor Swift — the Hendersonville teen on a recent Rolling Stone cover and the new issue of Allure, the one who sold more albums than any other artist in 2008 — needs some help, and she’s hiring at home.

Here’s what applicants need to know:

• Wanted: Three dancers for the country star’s Fearless 2009 tour.

• Time commitment: April through October, including an August stop at New York’s Madison Square Garden that sold out in less than one minute.

• Age: Must be at least 18 years old.

• What Taylor wants: People who can dance, sing and act. Experience playing the violin or viola is a definite plus. One of the positions also will require backup vocal experience.

• Required: Must have backgrounds in hip-hop, jazz and partner dancing.

Open auditions will be Tuesday in Nashville. Choreographer Robert Royston will conduct them beginning at 1 p.m. at 10 Quality Way, just off Dickerson Pike near Rock Street. Just follow the signs for Taylor’s audition.

Note to applicants — do not arrive before 11 a.m., and do bring a photo ID, resume and headshot.

Note to fans — and this is an important point given the number of people who found out by word of mouth that Taylor was showing up at midnight at Walmart to buy a copy of her most recent CD — Taylor is not scheduled to attend.

So, please no cutting class in hopes of a sighting.

The Tennessean: What’s the latest news on Taylor Swift?

Teen country star Taylor Swift will announce some news on Monday morning, The Tennessean has learned. Check back at TuneInMusicCity.com tomorrow morning to find out what it is.

Swift — who is featured on the most recent issue of Allure — now has career sales that top 7 million from two albums. She sold more albums than any other artist from any genre of music in 2008.

NOTE: Post your ideas about what the news will be in the comments below. If anyone gets it right, I’ll give them a shout out on the site!

Digital Spy: Taylor Swift baffled by celeb disguises

Taylor Swift has revealed that she would never consider wearing a disguise to fool the paparazzi.

The 19-year-old country-pop singer has claimed that famous people are usually looking for attention when they wear wigs and large sunglasses.

“I don’t really understand celebs disguising themselves,” Swift told the Daily Star. “I feel that if I got a disguise someone would recognise me. I’d feel an idiot.”

Asked how she is coping with fame, the star replied: “I really haven’t changed the way I live my life and I still feel that I’m the same person – but with a different schedule.”

Swift released her latest album Fearless in the UK earlier this month.

Houston Chronicle: Taylor Swift and a fierce RodeoHouston spirit

The glittery girl power was in full effect hours before Taylor Swift made her revolving-stage debut at theHouston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Girls with Taylor-made curls raced through the carnival grounds. Several — it seemed like thousands — sported Swift’s trademark look of fresh-faced makeup, flowing sundresses and cowboy boots. Large groups posed for photos in front of haystacks and horse statues.

The crossover princess herself met with several fans backstage, just before her Friday show. Cameras flashed. T-shirts were signed. Hugs were exchanged. Mom (who attended Memorial High School and the University of Houston) and dad watched proudly from the sidelines.

“I am so excited about this show,” Swift said during a pause. “We were doing soundcheck earlier, and I looked out at all the seats — 70,000 people. Oh my gosh.”

It was 72,658 to be exact, helping her break Jonases’ mark by 183 frenzied fans.

Much of Swift’s appeal comes from her disarmingly sweet enthusiasm. She seems genuinely excited, and often awestruck, by all her good fortune.

But she’s also adept at turning on the star power, as showcased during her fierce, spirited RodeoHouston set (a warm-up of sorts for her first headlining tour, which starts in April).

It was after so many days of established rodeo acts, a jolt of electric youth. She was alternately sassy and demure, working the stage like a seasoned pro. And her voice has gotten stronger and more commanding.

Swift’s entrance was preceded by home-video footage that chronicled her rise from singing baby to grownish-up superstar. She literally bounced onstage and launched into a rocked-up You Belong With Me, a cut off her maddeningly catchy Fearless disc. She quickly traded a black T-shirt and jeans for a gold minidress and matching guitar.

“I’m Taylor — class of 2008,” she shouted after zippy hit Our Song. Sweet, but she suddenly hit all the “cute Texas boys” in attendance with a warning.

“If I have a conversation with you that lasts more than five minutes, I’m probably going to write a song about you,” she said.

“If you don’t want me to write a song about you, then don’t do bad things.”

Cue the bitter chorus of Forever and Always, a tune Swift wrote about ex Joe Jonas. You’ve been warned.

Teardrops On My Guitar, a wispy ballad, was given a gentle pop pulse. When it was done, Swift took a step back, listened to the deafening roars and mouthed, “Oh my God.”

Her sweet spirit overcame any rough notes and filled the stadium with a real sense of joy. It resonated throughout her setlist, including White Horse, her gorgeously understated current single; and a thunderingShould’ve Said No, which ended with Swift banging on a trash can and whipping her curls into a rock frenzy.

Swift asked the crowd to hold up their cell phones during Tim McGraw, her nostalgic breakout single. So many twinkling lights and a twirling stage made for another sweet moment. It continued during a poppy take on monster hit Love Story, which earned one of the night’s most enthusiastic sing-alongs.

It could have ended — perfectly — there, but Swift notched things up further with Change and its anthemic “We sing hallelujah” hook. She turned the potentially sappy message into a triumphant tour-de-force.

And, in a flash, she returned to wronged-girlfriend role with searing set closer Picture to Burn. All in a day’s work for the world’s most famous country-pop teenager.

PAID ATTENDANCE: 72,658 (eighth all-time record)

CMT Insider Interview: Dolly Parton

Another very talented young lady is Taylor Swift. Everyone’s talking about her right now. And like you, she’s really a prolific songwriter at a young age.

She is. I have been extremely impressed with her, especially with her songwriting. I think she does magnificent work. She seems such a likeable little person, but I don’t know her. But I love watching her. My husband gets a kick out of her. He just loves watching her. He thinks she’s great. But I’m real impressed with the depth of her sometimes. I’ll tell you someone else that’s great like that — little Miley Cyrus. Miley is such a great songwriter — a lot of surprises about her that people don’t know yet. She’s still just Hannah Montana to a lot of people, but I think that she could have a very big career as a singer-songwriter even when she gets past the Hannah Montana days.

Taylor Blogs: Houston Rodeo and a giant stage

Hey!

I’m wiped out. I’ve been in the studio all day ( I know, I know.. We JUST put out a new album. I think I have a problem, I cannot stop writing songs.) It’s so much fun knowing that you can take your time, because you have like a year and a half to make something you’re really proud of. I love recording a few songs, waiting a few months, recording a few more.. Instead of devoting a few weeks to “record the album” and then it’s just done. I like dragging it out, that way you can be meticulous about every detail. Daydream about different ways to put the songs together, and then take them apart. I’m pretty obsessed with the whole process. So needless to say, it was good to be back in the studio with my redheaded producer who I missed terribly.

Tomorrow I play the Houston Rodeo for the first time in my life. I’ve heard about it since I was born because my mom’s from Houston. They’re telling me really crazy things about the ticket sales so far, and I’m kind of in shock about how many of your beautiful faces I’m going to be seeing tomorrow. 🙂 I’m really excited about it, and I’d love to see you there!

When we get back from Texas, I go straight into tour rehearsals for the Fearless tour. (!!!!) I can’t believe this is actually.. really… happening. They’ve set my stage up in this giant, massive warehouse and apparently it’s really something. Considering that the stage was originally inspired from a drawing I made a few years ago, I’ll be the most excited person in the room when we go over and see it for the first time. Then we start the hard part: Putting the show together.

Again, I know I say thank you every 4 seconds, but.. guys.. Thanks for all of this.

Wish me luck. See you in Houston 🙂
